Ricardo López Hevia (b. Havana, 1969) has no doubt that a successful photojournalistic image must pull you in, seduce you, and make you fall in love.
The 2015 winner of a Sport Media Pearl Award given by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), today López Hevia is the face of sports journalism on the island, where he has led the youngest generation of photojournalists, and is a major figure in Latin America.
For almost 30 years, his work across different areas has held an important place in both national and foreign press, although he defends his specialization in the very complex field of sports photojournalism.
During the last Pan American Games in Lima, he shared his experience with a group of AIPS fellows about the significance of images in various platforms, the use of new technologies, and editing.
Along with his indispensable knowledge of the rules and peculiarities of each sport, Ricardo affirms that every image represents, in essence, the vision and personal projection of the photojournalist behind the camera.
Between the mud, the distance and the narrow terrain, José Mojica and hundreds of riders were turned upside down in the Titan Tropic mountain biking competition.Manuel Benavides, a baseball player from Santiago, bravely moved 800 kilometers from his hometown at age 20, to fly through the air wearing another team’s uniform. To the east of Havana, in the Pan American Stadium, Cuban athletic stars seek to surpass their records and the unforgiving pounding of the sun.In the bleachers at Hershey Centre on the outskirts of Toronto, uncomfortable shadows darkened the wrestling mat. To shed bright light on that arena was almost impossible, but Ricardo López Hevia managed to do it.You start, you take the curve: it’s you against seven, it’s seven against you, it’s everyone against the stopwatch. Many thought that Marcia Videaux and Cuban gymnastics would slink out the back door at the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, but in the end she triumphed as the undisputed queen of the Antillean delegation.: The goalkeeper loses his head with an inevitable goal, a goal that saved Mexico’s national pride in the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz. If the Mexicans had lost to Cuba in that memorable semifinal, the country would still be in mourning.Virtuosity and art that emerges from the depths. No one can understand the pain a ball can cause until he’s hit with one in the middle of his back.Cuban soccer is still finding its way at the highest level of competition, but on the island’s streets, passion for the most universal sport is growing and has become a national favorite.Sometimes it seems that field hockey is a noble sport. Then you watch a game, you see the intensity, you see how players use their physique, you see how a ball is shot at the speed of light, and you change your mind. The moment of the blow, the moment everything implodes.
